Gap Runner

Red bars sweep down the screen. Each has one gap. Be in it.

How to play

  1. Drag your finger or move the mouse to slide the yellow ball left and right.
  2. Line it up with the gap in each red bar before the bar reaches you.
  3. Every bar you clear is a point. Touch a bar and the run ends.

About Gap Runner

Gap Runner is the simplest kind of dodging game. Your ball sits near the bottom of the screen and can only move sideways. Solid red bars come down from the top, one after another, and each has a single opening. Get through and you score.

How a run goes

The ball follows your finger or mouse, with a slight glide so it does not jerk about. On a keyboard, the left and right arrow keys nudge it. Bars arrive at even spacing, so the rhythm is steady, but the gap in each one is somewhere new.

Two things tighten as the seconds pass. The bars fall faster, and the gaps get narrower, shrinking from roughly a third of a phone screen to about four times the width of the ball.

Playing it well

Look at the next bar, not the one you are passing. By the time a bar is level with the ball, your decision about it is already made. The useful information is higher up.

Move early and stop. The ball needs a moment to glide into place, and arriving late is how you clip the edge of a gap you had lined up perfectly.

Wait in the middle. When the next gap could be anywhere, the centre of the screen is the shortest trip to either side.

Aim for the centre of the gap, not the near edge. It costs a few extra pixels of travel and saves a great many runs.

Twenty is a good first target. Past forty, the gaps are at their narrowest and it becomes a test of nerve. For HTML5 games with a single control, this is about as pure as it gets.
