About Cave Copter

Cave Copter is a one-finger flying game of the kind that kept people busy on early web portals. A small yellow helicopter flies through a cave of blue-grey rock. Hold the screen and it rises. Release and it falls. Touch the rock above or below and the flight is over.

How it works

The helicopter never hovers by itself. It is always either gaining or losing height, so level flight means a constant series of short presses.

The cave is drawn afresh every time. Its floor and roof wander up and down together, and the space between them slowly closes, from about two thirds of the screen height at the start to roughly one third later on. The cave also scrolls faster as you go. Your score is the distance flown.

Playing it well

Tap in short bursts. Long presses send you soaring into the roof, and long pauses drop you onto the floor. Quick, even taps hold a steady height, and you adjust by making them slightly longer or shorter.

Fly a little below the middle of the passage. Climbing is quicker than falling in this game, so it is easier to rescue a helicopter that is too low than one that is too high.

Look ahead to the right-hand side. The shape of the cave arrives there first. If the passage is about to rise, start climbing before you reach the slope.

Stay calm when it narrows. The tight sections look worse than they are, because the cave never changes height sharply from one step to the next.

A score of fifty is a decent flight. Among hold-to-fly HTML5 games it is a classic for good reason.
